In 2001-2002 Gary Akehurst, with other university colleagues, developed the first masters degree in sales management in the UK (and as far as known, in the world) at the University of Portsmouth Business School, in association with the Institute of Sales & Marketing Management, the Institute of Professional Sales (now incorporated into the Chartered Institute of Marketing) and the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Gary Akehurst continues to act as the Chair of Examiners at the Institute of Sales & Marketing Management and was recently one of the judges of the 2008 British Excellence in Sales and Marketing Awards organised by the Institute (having also judged the BESMA awards in 2007 and 2006).
