Gary Akehurst is the Founding Editor of The Service Industries Journal, the first academic refereed journal in the world devoted to the research of service activities, services management, services businesses and industries. The SIJ was established in 1980-81 and is currently published in volume 30 by Routledge, Taylor & Francis, Oxford. In January 2009 the SIJ moved to 12 issues a year (both in hard copy and online). In 2010, due to a continuing high volume of accepted papers for publication, the SIJ moved to 14 issues a year and from 2011 it moves to 16 issues a year.
